The claims Ullucci makes about the impact of poverty on
youth today is that today’s youth are struggling more than ever in school because
of their socioeconomic status. By having a lower socioeconomic status affects
many things in youth’s lives, like their parents having low paying jobs and living
in rundown homes because it’s the best they can afford. These run down homes
are typically located in rundown communities that usually have a high crime
rate.
Not only is their home environment struggling, their schools
are as well because they are located in the same communities. Poverty does not
just affect youth’s home environment but also their well-being. Youth’s from low
income backgrounds are less likely to receive medical care, which leads to many
untreated illnesses that affects youth’s school performance.
How poverty might impact a youth development space is that
youth may not be interested in an after school program because they do not
enjoy their regular school day. Also they might not be enough money to support
a program in a low socioeconomic community. The type of community I imagine
myself working in is an urban community because I have done practicums in two Providence
schools and one school in Newport and I really enjoyed being in that kind of environment.
However, I am not opposed to working in
any kind of community and feel no matter the community every youth would benefit
from a youth development space!
I totally agree with what you said towards the end about how poverty could impact a youth development space. Its true that if the person didn't enjoy their day at school they might not even want to come to an after school program, it could also affect the childs behavior in the after school program if their day sucked and they did decide to go to an after school program.
ReplyDeletePoverty effects a different number of issues. However, with regard to schools, some o these students grow up in a low economic area and go to school in the same low economic setting. This limits the experiences youth can attain. As a youth worker, we need to make sure the settings for our organization aren't limiting.
ReplyDeletePoverty is an issue that encompasses every area of a child's life. It effects their schooling, home lives, and every other aspect of their lives. We as youth workers must provide sympathy and help lead them to a future without being sympathetic and pitying the youth, I love how you focused on the idea that poverty effects every part of a youth's life.
ReplyDeleteI never though about it like that. How poverty and how it caries over into the school day could affect my job. Kids who have a rough day may be upset and coming to an after school program may just be tipping point for them. This did open my eyes a bit and im glad I was able to read this blog.
